Fixing a Shopify Email That Looked Right — Until It Was Sent

A custom HTML email template looked correct in a browser, but Shopify wasn't rendering several of its background colours. We investigated the markup, tested multiple approaches and adapted the email for Shopify's rendering environment.

HTML/CSS Shopify Email Development Debugging

The Challenge

The client had adapted an existing HTML email template for a Shopify store. When the HTML was opened directly in a browser, the design appeared as intended.

The problem appeared when the same code was pasted into Shopify's email notification system. Several of the coloured background sections were no longer displaying correctly.

The email looked right in the browser — but Shopify wasn't rendering the design the same way.

Finding the Problem

We compared the expected browser rendering with the Shopify result and inspected the existing table structure, CSS classes and background styling.

Some parts of the template were already rendering correctly, which gave us useful clues about how Shopify was interpreting the email markup.

Our Approach

01

Reproduced the Issue

Reviewed the HTML and compared the browser version against the version produced through Shopify.

02

Inspected the Existing Markup

Compared working and non-working sections to identify how their table cells, classes and background styles were being handled.

03

Tested Multiple Fixes

Iterated through different HTML and CSS approaches, checking the result after each revision.

04

Adapted the Email for Shopify

Adjusted the email markup and background handling so the required sections rendered correctly inside Shopify.

The Solution

The final revision used email-compatible background handling and markup adjustments to restore the missing coloured sections within Shopify's email environment.

Rather than relying only on how the HTML behaved in a standard browser, the template was adapted around the way the target email environment interpreted the code.

The Result

After several rounds of testing and refinement, the required background colours were successfully restored in the Shopify email.

The final email matched the intended design inside the client's Shopify workflow.

Client Feedback

Great working with Syed! It was a tricky HTML coding troubleshooting task, but Syed was persistent, did multiple revisions & got the job done. Thanks 🙂
